The ANTI-Lock Braking System (ABS), as the first driver assistance system, is today an indispensable standard of wheel-braked vehicles and serves the goal of both maintaining the steerability of the vehicle as far as possible during emergency braking and shortening the braking distance by optimally utilizing the contact forces between the tire and the road. As part of the Mechatronics I Master Laboratory, a portable friction test rig is used at the Institute of Dynamics and Vibrations to record friction characteristics on real road surfaces under various weather conditions. The results are then evaluated with an ABS controller programmed in MATLAB/Simulink with respect to the braking distance during emergency braking.
